WHAT IS FROM THE GROUND UP?
From The Ground Up (FTGU), is a healthy-choice fundraiser brought to you by Yukon government departments of Education, Health and Social Services, and Energy Mines and Resources.
In 2012 we piloted FTGU in two schools with the following goals: to promote healthy nutrition environments, encourage Yukoners to eat more vegetables, and connect Yukon farms to Yukon tables. Six years later, FTGU has grown from two to 17 schools and since last year eight daycares have joined. We’ve literally grown every year!
Each September, we connect schools and daycares with local farmers in order to sell boxes of fresh and delicious vegetables throughout the communities. Yukoners can purchase a box of locally-grown potatoes, beets, carrots and cabbage to prepare at home. They can also access recipes and veggie tips.
FTGU, when used in place of traditional fundraisers such as chocolate and cookie sales has proven that it is possible to have a profitable healthy-choice fundraiser for schools. Schools and daycares, receive 40% of the profits!
Another FTGU highlight is each participating farm that can, hosts a class of students. This class gets to experience hands-on where their food comes from as they clean and package produce for the fundraiser.
From The Ground Up offers schools, daycares and communities the opportunity to:
- Get a variety of fresh, locally grown vegetables;
- Support Yukon farmers;
- Promote healthy eating to students, parents, teachers, daycares and community members;
- Support a healthy nutrition environment;
- Feel good about supporting fundraising events, such as field trips and graduation;
- Raise money for schools;
- Help out our community by purchasing a vegetable box for donation.
